How pre-harvest grain store treatment works

Preparing a grain store before harvest requires a systematic approach that addresses structural hygiene, residual pest populations, and preventive protection. Our treatment programme combines thorough cleaning, targeted insecticide application, and practical advice.

Facility survey and assessment

We start with a detailed inspection of your facility, examining areas where pests might harbour. This includes checking grain residues in corners, floor cracks, auger housings, elevator pits, and behind fixed equipment. We also assess structural conditions, identifying gaps, damaged seals, and potential entry points that could allow pests or moisture ingress.

Cleaning

Before any treatment can work effectively, the store must be thoroughly cleaned. All old grain residues should be removed, as these harbour insects and provide breeding material. Dust, chaff, and spillages should be cleared from floors, walls, ledges, and equipment.

Residual insecticide treatment

Once the store is clean and dry, we apply residual insecticide treatments to all internal surfaces. We use approved products specifically formulated for grain storage environments. These residual treatments create a protective barrier that kills insects on contact and offers some residual protection.

Fumigation treatment

For facilities with a history of persistent infestations, or where structural conditions make thorough cleaning difficult, we may recommend a pre-harvest fumigation using phosphine gas to eliminate any hidden pest populations throughout the structure.
